Specialist Area Project

Introduction

I began this project by taking pictures of the different plants that were provided and presented for us and sketched out the textures, shapes and colours of these images that I found the most interesting. Instantly my mind started generating ideas on which direction I may go with the project.

Arctic

We were given four different biomes to which we could base our artistic exploration on. I instantly gravitated towards the harsh and hostile (yet visually stunning) conditions of Arctic regions. I took time to research the unique life that had adapted to inhabit areas in such cold climates and drew inspiration from that and other natural beauties often seen in Arctic regions to come up with four unique mood boards which would help me to figure out which direction I would want to go in with my garment.

Tundra – Focused on the contrast between the brown tones of earth and the white tones of the snow. This contrast is often seen in the animals that inhabit Arctic regions as well as the garments of Inuits.
Northern Lights – Focused on the beauty of the sky in Arctic regions. A part of nature I have often been infatuated by and dream to be able to see for myself one day.
Arctic Mist – The foggier and more desolate side of the Arctic. Dangerous, deadly cold and isolated.
Pink Winter – A more idealistic and romanticised representation of Arctic regions. The colours that the snow reflects when the sun dawns and sets.
